Why Jesus? What is believer's baptism?

John faces a day when people confuse him with the messiah. He could be overwhelmed with heady hopes. He could take credit for that which he is not, and has not done. It's ego-check time. He chose to be obedient, to call to repentance, even calling the king to task for sin.
